Swiss Delegation Visits Campus, Learns Challenges of Development in Palestine
Swiss academics and students visited Birzeit University on October 8, 2016. The delegation was introduced to the obstacles of development in Palestine.
The Director of the Institute of Environmental and Water Studies (IEWS) at Birzeit University Dr. Rashed Al Sa’ed explained to the Delegation the financial, socio-economic and political dimensions for achieving sustainable wastewater treatment facilities and effluent reuse schemes in Palestine. He stressed on the importance of solving managerial issues and decentralized treatment options for Palestinian communities.
The Director of the Center of Development Studies Tariq Da’na presented a chronology of events since the British Mandate and how it hindered the process of achieving a sustainable development in Palestine. He explained that such events that was accompanied with the Palestinian Authorities neoliberal policies especially after signing the Oslo Accords deepened the dependency to the Israeli market and foreign aid.
Faculty member at the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies Hanada Kharama explained the complexchallenges that faces education in Palestine. Kharama explained the Israeli occupation’s systematic practices that hinders any educational progress especially universities, particularly their ability to attract international academics and students, in addition to the severe mobility restrictions imposed.
